What am I looking forward to this year?  Definitely my new job at Club Penguin and new outdoor challenges with Mike.

How did I ring in the New Year?  At a party of course!  And Mike was by my side.  We baked star-shaped cupcakes and brought them to the party where they were greatly appreciated by everyone.  We partied with my friend Zach and his friends.  We had a very good time and I drank too much, too quick.

I began this post on the first of January and I’m posting it today on the 8th of January.  In my search for an appropriate blog quote I decided that a quote concerning “the future” would comment nicely upon the New Year.  Amidst a clatter of well intentioned wisdom regarding focusing on the present I found the following gem from the Northern Exposure episode, Hello, I Love You:

“Time is just something that we assign.  You know, past, present, it is just all arbitrary.  Most Native Americans, they don’t think of time as linear; in time, out of time, I never have enough time, circular time, the Steven’s wheel.  All moments are happening all the time.”

Isn’t it interesting that in this blog I discussed what I am looking forward to in the new year and I created a photo gallery discussing the past year; therefore analyzing past and present and fully embracing a linear timeline.  Of course I am not suggesting that we totally abandon our understanding of the ordering of events because time as we conceptualize it is certainly handy but we do put a lot of emphasis on it, don’t we?  Do we eat when we are hungry or at 8AM, 12PM, and 6PM?  How would things change if we did not view events as past, present and future?  Consider reading the novel, Monkey Beach by Eden Robinson to get a sense of this difference between linear and circular time.

Anywho, I think the beginning of a new year is an interesting time to consider the structures of time that we in fact “assign” and adhere to.  Please let me know if I am not making any sense at all!

Cheers!
Kathy.

BEST WISHES IN THE NEW YEAR AND IN ALL EVENTS NO MATTER WHEN THEY OCCURRED!
